When wet heat beats a dry sauna here

Most Bogor households ask for dry heat first, but a steam room genuinely wins for some of them. Anyone with sensitive airways usually prefers 45°C wet over 85°C dry. Wellness-resort guests in Megamendung expect to move between both, back to back. And if a bathroom is already being gutted for other reasons, converting a corner of it often causes less disruption than carving out two square metres somewhere else for a timber cabin.

The trade-off is real, so here it is plainly: per square metre, wet heat runs pricier than a dry cabin, needs 3–5 weeks on the clock instead of 2–4, and asks for more upkeep in a climate that is already damp to begin with. What you get back is a room children actually enjoy, sessions that stretch to twenty minutes without effort, and mosaic and light instead of timber.

Building a steam room that never actually leaks

The sequence here is fixed, not optional. A liquid membrane covers slab and walls first, running up behind every finish; the floor falls toward a drain; the ceiling slopes so condensation runs down the walls instead of onto whoever is standing underneath. Mosaic only goes on after all of that. Skipping the membrane to shave off a week is, by far, the most common reason we get called out to fix somebody else's steam room in Bogor.

The door and glass panel run 8 mm tempered, sealed full-height so nothing seeps past. Tiled, formed benches replace timber entirely in here. The generator lives in a ventilated cupboard a few metres from the room, with a service valve you can reach without smashing tiles — a small detail that gets overlooked more often than it should.

Power, water and drainage: the parts that matter

A 2×2 m room runs a 6–9 kW generator, which means 7,700–11,000 VA on the supply. That is already the case for most clusters in Bogor Nirwana Residence, Rancamaya and Sentul City; older houses in Kota Bogor usually need PLN's capacity upgrade first, filed before fabrication and paid for by the owner. The circuit itself runs heat-resistant cable, its own breaker and an ELCB.

On the water side, the generator wants decent pressure and, wherever the water runs hard, a softener so scale does not cut the element's life short. The drain side wants a proper fall toward a trapped gully — a token tilt in the tiles will not cut it. What it costs, and how the schedule runs

A turnkey 2×2 m build runs an indicative IDR 50–100 million, and that figure already folds in waterproofing, mosaic, the generator, glass, plus both the electrical and water hook-ups. Spas, gyms and resorts pay from IDR 150 million upward for the commercial version. As for fixing somebody else's leaking room, budget IDR 15–50 million — the final number hinges entirely on how much wall has to come down to reach the fault.

What it costs

Rupiah figures include the generator, waterproofing, mosaic and both the electrical and water hook-up. A PLN capacity upgrade sits outside this range, and the firm price only comes after we've inspected the room.
