Why does a sauna make sense in the rain capital?
Bogor earned the name kota hujan for a measurable reason: 3,500–4,000 mm of rain falls here in a normal year, the air sits at 80–90 per cent humidity for months, and a dry afternoon is the exception. Altitude does the rest. Kota Bogor sits near 250 m, Sentul City climbs from 200 to 450 m, Gadog and Vimala Hills reach 650–800 m, and by Cisarua or Megamendung the thermometer falls to 14–21 °C after dark. In that weather a cabin at 70–90 °C is not an indulgence; it is the only genuinely warm, genuinely dry room in the house.
The housing stock is just as varied. Older homes around Sempur, Taman Kencana and Empang often still sit on a 2,200–4,400 VA meter, so we steer those owners towards an infrared sauna at 1.7–2.4 kW, or price the PLN upgrade before anyone orders a 6 kW heater. Cluster houses in Sentul City, Bogor Nirwana Residence and Rancamaya usually hold 5,500–7,700 VA and take a four-person dry sauna without argument. The weekend houses Jakarta families keep along the Puncak road nearly always ask for a roofed outdoor sauna cabin with a cold plunge beside it.
That humidity is why we refuse to build the way a dry-climate workshop would. Without an aluminium vapour barrier and a 20 mm ventilation gap behind the cedar, sauna timber in Bogor grows mould inside two or three years; we have stripped out cabins only four wet seasons old. Every wall we make is a sandwich, every cabin gets supply and exhaust ventilation, and anything in a garden gets a roof. Engineering a sauna for 90 per cent humidity
Panel, 50 mm rockwool, aluminium foil vapour barrier, a 20 mm ventilation gap, then cedar. Vapour never reaches the insulation and the cladding can still dry between sessions.
Fresh air enters low beside the heater; damp air leaves through an extract fan. After a session the cabin dries in minutes rather than hours, which is the whole game here.
A Harvia heater, or Sawo or Tylö, with 1–2 years of factory cover, a guard rail, heat-resistant SiHF cable, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB on the circuit.
Western red cedar, Scandinavian spruce or thermowood inside, aspen or abachi benches, and ulin or bengkirai only for outdoor decking that actually takes the rain.

Do you build for weekend villas in Cisarua and Megamendung?

My house in Kota Bogor only has 2,200 VA. Can I still have a sauna?
Two routes. An infrared sauna draws 1.7–2.4 kW and runs on 2,200–4,400 VA with no upgrade. For a dry sauna with a 6–9 kW heater the supply must rise to 7,700–11,000 VA through PLN's change-of-capacity service; that cost is paid by the owner and we calculate it before the quote.
Will a timber sauna go mouldy in this climate?
One built without a vapour barrier will, usually in two to three years. Ours use the five-layer sandwich wall with aluminium foil, a 20 mm gap, supply and exhaust fans, and cedar or thermowood cladding. Habit matters too: run the extract for 10–15 minutes after a session and leave the door ajar.
What is an ice bath and who is buying one in Bogor?
An ice bath, or cold plunge, is a timber tub held at 3–15 °C by a chiller. In Bogor the buyers are cyclists and runners training on the Sentul and Puncak climbs, families in Gunung Putri, and villa owners who want the full hot-cold circuit for guests. Details on the cold plunge page.
How long does the work take, and how is it paid?
A home sauna takes 2–4 weeks to install plus 1–2 weeks to source materials; infrared 1–2 days; a steam room 3–5 weeks; an outdoor cabin or cold plunge 1–2 weeks. Payment is 50 per cent on signature, the balance before installation, then handover with the two-year warranty. Book on the contact page.
