Ice bath

Ice bath and cold plunge builds for Bogor and Sentul

A timber tub held between 3 and 15 °C by a chiller, for recovery after the Sentul and Puncak climbs.

An ice bath Bogor build is a larch or thermowood tub with a liner, filtration and a plunge chiller that holds the water anywhere between 3 and 15 °C. It is for cyclists, runners, families and villa owners who want the hot-cold circuit. Indicative IDR 45–90 million installed, delivered in 1–2 weeks.

Who is actually using an ice bath in Bogor and Sentul?

Cyclists, first. The climbs out of Sentul and up the Puncak road draw riders from Jakarta every weekend, and a cold plunge at the end of a four-hour ride does more for the following Monday than any amount of stretching. Runners on the Sentul trails use it the same way. Then come the families in Gunung Putri and Kota Wisata, where afternoons are genuinely hot even when the hills above are not.

The third group is commercial: villa managers in Cisarua and Megamendung pairing a plunge with a sauna, and small studios in Kota Bogor adding recovery to a membership. We size those differently — heavier filtration, a bigger chiller and a maintenance routine written for staff. Our article on cold plunges for runners and cyclists covers the training side.

How does the plunge chiller hold 3–15 °C in this climate?

A half-horsepower to one-horsepower plunge chiller pulls heat out of the water through a titanium heat exchanger and rejects it to the air, in exactly the way a refrigerator does. Set the controller to 10 °C and it stays at 10 °C, whether the day is 32 °C in Tajur or 17 °C in Megamendung. Bogor's cool nights help, which is why our tubs recover faster here than the same unit does on the coast.

Water quality is the part people underestimate. The circuit runs through cartridge filtration and either ozone or UV, so the water stays clear for weeks instead of days, and the tub gets an insulated cover to keep debris and sun out. Larch or thermowood forms the visible body; the liner does the waterproofing. There is a drain and a fall, because a tub you cannot empty easily is a tub that stops being used.

Temperature, duration and safety for beginners

Start an ice bath at 12–15 °C for two minutes, not at 3 °C for ten. Most people settle at 10–12 °C for three to five minutes, and athletes who plunge after training often work at 8–10 °C. The rule that matters more than the number: breathe slowly, never plunge alone, and get out when shivering turns hard rather than pushing through it.

For contrast work, heat first and cool second, and finish warm rather than cold if you plan to sleep soon after. If you have a cardiac condition or are pregnant, ask a doctor before starting — we would rather say that plainly than sell a tub to someone who should not use one. Steps and a handrail are part of every build, not an accessory.

Power, siting and the sauna plus ice bath package

Electrically this is the easy one. A chiller of half to one horsepower draws roughly 0.4–0.75 kW, so a 2,200 VA house copes with no upgrade at all. It needs a dedicated circuit with an ELCB, weather protection for the unit, and 30–40 cm of clear air around it for the fan. Running cost is IDR 300,000–700,000 a month depending on the target temperature and how exposed the tub is.

Siting works best on a terrace or a covered corner of a garden, close to the sauna if there is one, on a surface that can drain. Most clients pair the ice bath with a dry sauna or a roofed outdoor cabin; a full wellness zone starts at an indicative IDR 250 million. Figures for every combination are on the price page.

Frequently asked questions

How often does the water need changing?

With filtration and ozone or UV, every four to six weeks for household use and more often for a villa in constant use. Top up between changes and keep the cover on.

Is the chiller noisy on a back terrace?

It is comparable to an outdoor air-conditioning unit and only runs when it is pulling temperature down. We site it away from bedroom windows and on anti-vibration feet.

Can I have the plunge now and the sauna later?

Yes, and many clients do. We leave the electrical route and the drain in place for the cabin so the second phase does not mean lifting a terrace twice.

How long to cool tap water down to 10 °C?

Roughly six to twelve hours from a cold start, depending on volume, chiller size and whether the tub is covered. After that it holds temperature continuously, so the wait happens once.
